FACE LIFT FOR NIGERIA’S BLUE ECONOMY AND MARINE RESOURCES
Nigeria’s incumbent administration under Prez Ahmed Bola Tinubu has earned international accolades for the 17 August 2023 creation of the Nigerian Blue Economy and Marine Resources. The move has been widely acknowledged as a lever to unlock its blue economy and marine resources estimated by the Nigerian Maritime and Safety Administration (NIMASA) at a whopping $296 billion.
According to the influential Vanguard tabloid edition of 17 August, the move has been promptly hailed by the Nairobi-based Africa Blue Economy Alliance (ABEA) as visionary, and holding great promise for the country’s impoverished youth, mostly in the restive Niger Delta. Ms Juanita Njiru ABEA’s interim secretary offered Nigeria’s incoming Minister of the Blue Economy, Hon Olabunmi Tunji-Ojo its critical help in crafting an innovative strategy to address climate and environmental challenges enshrined in the UN sponsored Millenium Development Goals.
