GABON REOPENS ITS LAND, SEA, AND AIR BORDERS
Following days of intense anxiety among the international community as to which direction its new authorities regrouped in the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI), following last Wednesday’s Military Coup, yesterday Saturday 2 September 2023, reopened all its land, sea, and air borders. Justifying CTRI’s decision, its spokesperson, Colonel Ulrich Manfoumbi.
Manfoumbi held that opening its borders is a signal that the new authorities want the rule of law, continuity of state activities, and good international relationships to form the bulwark of its policies.
Last Wednesday’s coup rendered possible by-elections widely held to be flawed, took many by surprise in the Central African country known for its apathy over the years to political events. As such, traders and other travelers inside and outside Gabon have been stranded for days. On the Cameroonian side of its borders, reports speak of hundreds of trucks, cars, and traders from the sub-region, reportedly expecting the decision to be implemented, as troops amassed on the Gabonese side are still to begin implementation of the decision.
